I recently developed a peanut and pine nut allergy. Today, I had shrimp and my throat got itchy, my face got hot and then red and then, the itching. Wicked itching. After an hour or two, I took a benadryl and it cleared up. I wanted to go to the allergist and be tested for this, but, I think I found out the answer. I am so annoyed. Anyone else have similar allergies start in their 50's?

Thanks so much, I had 2 small homemade crabcakes last night and my face got hot and I was itchy, not as bad as the shrimp, but probably because it was a smaller amount. Never again, shellfish is over for me.

Hi again,

I am wondering if any of you that have posted on this thread have
ever carried an Epi Pen? (purchased through perscription from you
doctor etc) In case of any future severe allergic reactions to shellfish
and the risk involved I am thinking strongly that I should get one very
soon. Anaphylaxis reactions are so frightening sometimes! Last time
I snuck a few bites of fresh crab, I could not get to ER fast enough it
seemed and my clients family meraber had to drive me there quick! It
was one of my harsher reactions that day. Why I even thought that
maybe this time nothing would happen was totally irresponsible and
nuts. I'll never do that again but do have concerns about cross
contaminations or something slipping by me. Anyway just a question
to you all if your Epi Pen worked well for your allergic reaction neeRAB?

Yes, I have one, but thankfully havent needed it yet and hope I never do. Thanks for your input, I hope you are doing well.

Hi!
I think you can develop an allergy to anything at anytime during your life. I would
strongly suggest making that appointment with your allergist, and stay away from that
shrimp! Your reaction to it could be far worse the next time you eat it, and maybe even
the Benadryl won't help!

p.s. good thing you have not needed your pen yet!

Doing pretty ok.......thanks!

Best regarRAB to you to tmrots.

tmrots,
I have been allergic to shrimp all my life and occasionally I have ingested shrimp without know it was in the food I was eating. Each time ended in a visit to the ER. Not to scare you but rather to inform you; you should be aware that during an allergic episode your throat can close up. I suggest doing your best to stay away from shrimp and to check labels for shrimp content. Also be very careful eating out as many places add shrimp as a favoring especially in Chinese fooRAB. Also be aware that you may also be allergic to lobster and crab.

Thank you both. I was thinking of giving it another try to be sure, but I though otherwise after reading your posts. This reaction was rather strong and quick. I was so shocked, i have had shrimp so many times without the slightest reaction. Itchy is livable, throat closing is another ballgame alltogether. I will be careful.

My allergies to shellfish began in my late 40's. Severe hives, whelts,
swollen lips, swollen ears, throat tight, itching....gosh what an ordeal.
Now I do not eat shellfish and always carry Benedryl in my car or purse.
Otherwise ER if I happen to wonder upon some sort of cross contami-
nations. Even if lightly I can get sick quickly! Oddly enough I have
also concluded that I am allergic to strawberries. Also am severly
allergic to wool. Clothes etc make of wool. My allergy tests were done
years ago and should be done again. Some nuts occassionally also
cause a rash and itching. So I must be careful like you are going to
have to do.

If you have a medical doctor be sure it is included in your recorRAB
and that your PCP is aware. Also list it if ever you were to have any
surgeries or even some testing. It would be in your best interest for
medical staRAB to know.

Best Wishes,

Janaly
