Apparently, the Shaw Brothers studio of HK made some of the best kung-fu movies ever in the 1970s. People in the US talk about them much more.

I haven't seen any Shaw Brothers movies at all; but finally in the UK they will be slowly be released here (around 30 titles) on DVD; thanks to Momentum Asia.

The first batch of releases come out on Feb 21st; and providing they are of course are UNCUT; I am seriously thinking to buy them all and build a collection.

The first batches of releases are:
Heroes Two
The Heroic Ones
The Spiritual Boxer

So, I guess my simple question is: Has anyone here seen a Shaw Bothers movie and are the movies as good as people say they are?
 
Well, at least someone replied to my thread; even though it was not exactly the answer I was looking for! I guess there are not a lot of Shaw Brothers fans here.

Thanks, I'll consider your recommendation. Martial arts with vampires sound great!
 
I have seen several Shaw Brothers movies on poor fuzzy VHS before now with ultra bad dubbing. I can't remember exactly which ones I saw (they all had a similar look), but they were all fairly good, although the hype may tarnish your expectations somewhat - very simple, linear plots from what I've seen...
 
The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires was a collaboration between Hammer and the Shaw Brothers - and what a preposterous load of fun it is too :D
 
i know this won't help you,but i hadn't heard of the SHAW BROTHERS,until i saw your post,checked them out and discovered that RAYMOND CHOW had started out with them before starting GOLDEN HARVEST.
if you're wanting to build your collection on historical grounRAB go for it,but for sheer enjoyment,i'd try to rent before buying as they do have very mixed reviews.
 
OK Man, about the Shaw Brothers films, I can attest to the quality of the production then. The movies are really quite entertaining and some of them has this Chinese mysticism feel to them or just moody depending on the subject. I can offer you some recommendations as well. Please keep in mind that these movies were being produced from the 50s' right up the early 80s' so you won't find the super fast viciousness of the styles being used today in most Hong Kong films. Personally, I prefer the older ones; to me they feel a little more authentic. I have only seen English Dubbed Versions both in the cinema and on VHS. So I can imagine the beauty of the re-mastered DVRAB.

These movies should get you off on a good start, and believe me if you like them, it is certain that you will see much more that you’ll love.
