sharp pain in side of head?

I've ruled out organic causes (like tumor) and I don't think it's migraines. but I will get a headache. and sometimes what will happen is later I'll be reading and I'll get a sharp throbbing pain on the side of my head either at my temple or behind my ear. it will only last a few seconds and it will stop. does anyone know what it could be?
I don't have a history of migraines, and neither does any of my family that I know of.

my mom had the same exact issue and she was diagnosed with petit-mal epilepsy. which is when the seizures aren't even noticeable... just a sharp pain in the head or you catch yourself zoning out for a second. not to freak you out or anything if i'm wrong, but if this keeps on happening (and you've done all you can about treating migraines) see a neurologist asap.

DO NOT try and get medical advice online for something like this. It could be any number of things so you need to see a doctor.

What you are experiencing, at least to the best of my knowledge, is a sign of a migraine. It occurs in roughly 40% of migraine sufferers and is dubbed the "ice pick pain". I would recommend lying down for a while, drinking lots of water, making sure to stay in a cool area with little light.

My family doesn't have a history of migraines either, but I get them sometimes. Don't rule it out as a possibility just because of that. If the pain doesn't go away within a long period of time, be sure to call a doctor.
