It's very difficult to describe, but I will try. I am a 24-year-old female. Had a couple of colds this month, and coming to the end of a week and a half of PMS (sorry, it will be relevant later), but otherwise healthy.
Last week, I slid on the ice, caught myself quickly on the car so that I didn't fall, but I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. It started off just being the lower right abdomen, which prompted me to think maybe I had aggravated an existing appendicitis. I felt around, but didn't feel anything out of the ordinary, in my own non-medical opinion.
The next morning, I woke up and felt almost like a bunch there, but not a well-defined bunch, just some tight bunched tissue with no real defined edges. I thought I must have pulled a muscle. For the next few days, it hurts to cough, laugh, or to breathe too deeply, but only sometimes, and there is no pain in between these activities. Sometimes the pain is at the site of the "injury" and sometimes it is not, but it is always in the lower abdomen, across the same level or line (It does not move up or down, just side to side).
As of yesterday, I could do a curl up again.
Today, I'm sitting at the computer. I laugh at something on the screen, and BAM! That same pain, radiating out over my entire lower abdomen. This time it felt a lot more crampy, so I'm wondering if it's just cramps associated with PMS. It was awfully spooky to me how similar it felt, but also different...
The time of the month is relevant, because I have tried abdominal exercises in the past when I have been on the verge of getting my period. Once when I was in high school, I tried to do a curl up on an incline- something I could usually do with ease and hundreds of times- and it felt like I ripped every lower abdominal muscle I had out by the root. I was in agony for the next few days and didn't return until after my period had ended, when I had much less trouble going back to my exercise.
Maybe this is the same kind of thing, and it's just a limitation I am going to have to accept about myself? Or am I going to die of a hernia? No, I am not expecting a Yahoo Answers diagnosis to replace a hospital visit. Just wondering if anyone has insight or experience. Thanks.
