Sharp, intense pain below rib cade, right side of body?

Its happened before, and lasts for about a minute or 2. its about 8 cm (right) from the middle of my body, and about 13 cm down from the right nipple. its an intense sharp, stabbing pain.
My appendix? Are you serious? When should I go, the pain is no longer there, but should I still visit the ER?
