The England and Wales Cricket Board today announced that legendary former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne will be their new captain, replacing Andrew Strauss. Warne qualifies for England due to having a German grandparent. As Germany are an EU country, this means he can play for England. Despite it being less than four years since his last appearance for Australia, which would under ICC rulings bar him from playing for another country, Warne took his case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, citing restraint of trade, and restriction on his human rights.

The judges upheld Warne's complaint, and ruled that the ICC were in breach of human rights legislation, in stopping Warne from representing a European Union country. President of the European Court, Jean-Paul Costa, stated that Warbe could not be stopped from plying his trade in England, and that the ICC ruling was unlawful in a Eurpoean country. Although the Court has no jurisdiction over the ICC worldwide, Warne can represent and play for England in any EU member country.

England's decision to pick Warne has rocked Cricket Australia. Chief Executive James Sutherland expressed deep disappointment that Warne has decided to throw in his lot with England. Cricket Australia may yet contest the ruling, or consider withdrawing from the Ashes if Warne is allowed to play for England.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting refused to comment, but is believed to have tried everything in his power to persuade Warne to re-consider.

Warne himself stated that playing for England was a dream come true, and he was determined to do everything in his power to win back the Ashes for England.

What are your views on this momentous decision?

Hi Oracle - being in the month of April no one believes this is true. It could very well be your imagination given that England bowlers except Flintoff able to be a capable bowler.

Ok - even with Warne on England side, it will be hard for England to beat Aus. Provide us with the news with updated links - until then it will be another April fools joke

I think warne is doing a good thing , i see no wrong in him playing for england if he wants to represent them then it's his decision, if he's allowed to then all to the good. I hope he does it. Unusual situation but it could work .

Strange this hasn't made it to the Aussie newspapers? Hmmmm, it is a week since April Fool's day, so I must conclude that you have been out in the sun too long mate, lol.
