I have a relatively mild case of exercise induced asthma. By mild I mean it is controllable with inhaled albuterol. I take two to three puRAB on my inhaler before I exercise and that usually keeps any wheezing from happening.

My problem is an occasional occurrence of shallow breathing. I have had this from time to time over the years. It is the frightening feeling of not being able to get a deep breath. It feels different from asthma, actually; instead of air getting stuck in my windpipe (asthma), this is the sensation of the air not going into my lungs, with a feeling of tightness across my chest.

I got this feeling yesterday when I was outside running on a somewhat cold day (32F with wind chill in the 20s). I was wearing a scarf so I pulled it up over my face and that helped enough to finish the run fairly comfortably. But the shallow breathing continued the rest of the day and even into this morning. I really don't know if this is an asthma symptom or if it is something else.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar problem? Any advice on how to control this or keep it from happening? I intuitively think that improved breathing technique might help, but I don't know where to start learning better breathing technique.

Thanks in advance for any input.

That was an asthma attack. Cold weather can make it difficult to breathe properly for asthmatics. I can't jog in really cold weather if there is any breeze. You might want to talk with your pulmonologist about this episode.
