I need help with a Shakespeare paper I have for homework. Specifically the Merchant of Venice. I have to explain three puns which are in the book, but I don't understand ANY of them...
1. That is the very defect of the matter sir. (defect is underlined)
2. If e'er the Jew her father come to heaven, it will be for his gentle (pronounced gentile) daughter's sake.
3. Farewell; and if my fortune be crost (crossed), I have a father, you a doughter lost (missing).
Any help??
