Sex in the dark or with lights on?

Okay, so i watched the notebook this weekend. And if you have ever seen the movie, you know the sex scene. I wanted to know if sex really plays out like that. Do people actually stand across the room and take their clothes off? And is it usually in the dark or with lights on?
this is probably in the wrong category but i didn't know what else to put it in.
