Severe Muscle Tightening/ Knotting 2 weeks post fusion

I am 2.5 weeks post op one level fusion of L5-S1. It was a 360, so he went in through both the front and back.

I am having some really severe muscle tightening with knotting and trigger points in my lower back muscles. It is seriously so painful. Nothing is helping. Not self massage, professional massage (approved by surgeon), or my muscle relaxers, and it seems to just be getting worse. I am only allowed to take one valium every 12 hours at this point. When I massage my back, I can feel that the whole muscle is just one big trigger point, it is worse on my right side. It is getting to the point where I can barely move. Is there anything else I can do? Has anyone else experienced this? Is this something I should contact my surgeon about?

Thank you

That does not seem like enough pain medication. I would be calling him everyday. You should not have to endure that much pain.

hey meggs, i am sending you a PM about this. because you were actually at summit ortho, you DO have a wonderful place to go for this it is within their own network of summit rehabilitation services. WONDERFUL myofascial release therepist i have been seeing at the place in woodbury who does truely amazing things for my insane level of TPs and huge upper muscle problems. I KNOW he could help you too hon. marcia

Well I am also allowed to take 2 oxycodone every 6 hours, but I only mentioned the muscle relaxer, which is the valium.

I was going to suggest heat, which is my best friend, second only to my Vicodin. That's the only thing that helps my muscle cramps and knots.

Marcia ought to have a new title, instead of just "senior veteran." She should be named queen or something, she's helped so many people here!

Blessings,
Emily

If you have hardware in there, it may be irritating the muscles. I don't know the details of your surgery, but... If something is interrupting the way a muscle is supposed to function, this type of spasm can happen. I would request an app't with your doc.

Also, a TENS unit might help you. It only made mine worse! But, it might help you. It can interrupt the signal to the muscles.

Good luck. Do not just suffer. Keep contacting your doc or his nurse.

why thank you emily, could you tell my kiRAB and hubby that i AM a queen??lol. thanks.

hey meggs, did you get the two PMs? hope so. the myofascial release really really helps me so much in getting rid of the worst TPs i have ever had in my life. that therepy, out of about five? is the ONLY one that has kept my pain intensities down so i have not even had to increase my narcotic at all too. that one is huge for me for many different reasons. another thing that could help you right now is what i was using before this therepy and still use now? the corabo of the lidocaine patches and this amazing topical called 'biofreeze"?

the biofreeze is the only topical(out of like 10 that i have just sitting in my closet) that works at all for me and for alot of people who i know who i have told about it who have had really amazing pain relief with it. it has only menthol listed as the 'active' ingredient, but it is NOT menthol that does the job, that would be something called "illex"(actually is from the holly berry),that is listed as not an active?? very strange, but this IS the part that is very different in how this stuff actually works. it just has to have some level of real anti inflammatory type of properties in it for it to actually work on the worst areas of my pain somehow.

this corabo was the only thing i actually used when the rest of my rotator tendon snapped on me back in 07? from nov 6 thru feb 6-08(surgery day),this was the ONLY thing i actually used for the very huge sudden increase in my pain right after that sucker just tore in half on me. i really was amazed at how extremely well this worked. it has a scent to it because of the menthol, but it pretty much dissipates shortly after you roll it on and rub it in. not at all like ben gay smell crap?

you used to only be able to get the bio from any chiro or therepy facility, but if i remeraber right, someone on the pain boarRAB mentioned they actually got this at a CVS pharm? you should be able to track it down. i do think other people are also creating their own 'brand' of this too now? as long as it has that illex in it,it would more than likely be the same thing. but i would really see if you can get some hon. it just works that well on my nightmare upper neck/back crap.

the lido patches themselves also work well on the TPs when you just cut them into like a half or quarters and make sure you lie them right over the actual TP itself? this helps stop the radiating out of the pain to other areas too. just one suggestion for you tho. when using any lido patch or any other patch that CAN actually be cut(some cannot) i always take the scissors and kind of round off the actual corners so they don't catch and roll up on you when clothing keeps contacting it? it really does help alot.

i do hope things are going okay meggs, have not heard back so i tend to worry. its a mom thing. just let us know how you are doin hon,K? marcia

forgot to mention something. ask your surgeon about trying the med 'vistral"? this works really well on muscle spasm crap, even actually better than valium at times for me. mot surgeons usually always order this med for any ortho types of surgery when you are in the hosp post op? it also enhances the effects of the narcotic in some ways as in making it work a bit more effectively? it REALLY helps with my spasticity that i have for certain times. just thought i would mention that to ya. it would be worth a shot if the muscles are just that bad. it is also not a controlled substance so there should not be any problem for your surgeon to write it for you. bye!

Ask your Dr. about extended release Morphine. I was on Dilaudid, every 6 hours and pain was unbearable ....like a roller coaster becouse it is short lasting. I was in the hosp. for 6 days after surgery and then 7 days in rehab. The Physiatrist changed the meRAB after my 3rd day in rehab and it really worked better for me. Still alot of pain but at least it wasint spiking. He also put me on baclofin(muscle relaxer) and it works well for me. I am 6 months post op,everyones condition/healing is different but u have to be patient. You have JUST had surgery, keep letting your Dr know everything so your meRAB can be adjusted/changed to get the right concoction that works for YOU.
Good Luck and stay positive.

I don't think they will switch my meRAB or allow me to take more. They started weaning my pain meRAB 1 week post op. He wants me off everything my 6 weeks post op. According to the nurse, he refuses to prescribe pain meRAB past 6 weeks.
