SounRAB so familiar. When I first "hurt" myself (unknown exactly what I did), I had what I called my RBP - Random Butt Pain. Just as you describe, it could be intense and horrible. Several times, the spasming and pain knocked me to the ground. (I was training real estate agents and suddenly I would just drop behind the podium. Cute. Not.)

I spent 3 months dealing with it, going to a beloved personal friend chiropractor after which I would feel good for about a day. She firmly believed I had piriformis syndrome.

By the time I relented to go to my doctor, it was BAD. She sent me immediately to physical therapy who "diagnosed" a herniated L5-S1 in under 5 minutes. An MRI confirmed I had blown out my L5-S1 and they didn't know how I was walking much at all.

I now have permanent nerve damage and nurabness from waiting that 3 months. Can you find a different doctor to get to the bottom of this?

Well its been 2 years since my car accident and about the only thing the docters keep doing is upping my medication and sending me out the door. I had a MRI a year ago that showed three herniations with tears and my L5/S1 went straight up through the endplate into the bone.

Anyways everything was not to severe in pain so I didn't look for answers, but now I know I need to find out whats going on because of strong pain. So my butt hurts all the time now and can sit until the pain increases to the point I have to get up. My butt starts spasming and goes into the back of my leg at times. It's a throbbing type of pain that goes from a 4 to 8 pain level in a second over and over again.

My docter refuses any tests because he doesn't think it will help find out where the pain is coming from even after I flipped out on him.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated....

Yes my last three discs are bad, my docter that is 74 years old is a problem because I don't think he cares to much as he is ready to leave his practise. I don't no he just says its from my back and the two orthopedics say theres nothing they can do. The last appointment he handed me some trial lyrica but from what I read it will make me a zorabie so I am reluctant to try it. I guess I will have to go to a walk in clinic to try to get another test. I have tried anti inflammatories that help a little then it comes back throbbing mostlly in my butt, never below my knee.

They really didnt say anything when i went last i saw a resident and i refuse to see that same one cause all he said in a smart way was i knew i was taking the risk of still having pain before i signed for the surgery. I knew that but this pain is really unbearable.

I go to a teaching hospital and i hate it like me seeeing a resident last time I never see the same doctor which aggervates me but everyone says how good teaching hospitals are. But my next appointment is in June and i have alot of questions.

I NEVER had this pain before.

You really do need to see a spine specialist, meaning an ortho. or neuro. surgeon who work on spines at least 75% of the time. As for Lyrica, I know some who swear by it, so it might be worth a try. I, on the other hand, take Neurontin and it is the same, in that some people get excellent results from it and others have side affects. I have been on it for 3 years and get 90 % relief. So, don't hesitate to try a medication, knowing that there are other meRAB. that you can try, if one doesn't work. My Dr. explained to me that he was going to start me out on a low dose, and slowly up it, until we got to a level that worked. This way, I did not get any side affects, but it did take about a month before I got the full benefit of it. So, if you are started at a low dose, do determine that it doesn't work until you are up to the full stregnth.

Please keep us updated.

I have this also. It hurts SOOO bad when it is spasming and the pain just goesdown the back of my thigh right before the knee. I am taking neorontin but it does not help at all. Before the surgery i took lyrica andit did not help me.

Some people say it could be a year or longer to get rid of all this nerve pain but i dont think i could last that long. I never had any of this with my first surgery.

I don't understand why your Dr. would not want to figure out what was causing this new pain. Did he give you his thoughts on what he thinks is the cause? I too have to deal with butt and leg pain. For me, it is sciatica. Does your pain go below your knees or is it above it? That can tell the Dr. a lot, just by knowing that and knowing they type of pain. Is yours like an electical shooting pain, a burning or something else?

I am wondering if maybe your Dr. knew what was causing the pain, from the description, and knew that a test such as an MRI would not make a difference. I am thinking that even though my Dr. has alway been good at trying to figure out what is causing the pain, I don't think I have ever had a test for my butt and leg pains. But, he has always been able to find the right medication for the pains.

Keep us uspated if you find out what is causing the pain. If you are not happy with your Dr., think about switching to one who will listen and help you.

Backpainer i know your frustration it hurts me alot also. It hasnt been to bad the past couple of days i actually got out and threw the ball with my 9 year olRAB. but its coming back.

I am going to be sure to ask my doctor about it and the next time i go i will not see just students i will gripe until i see the doctor.

Sorry you are in so much pain also i wish you luck. And i wanted to add i know exactly what you are saying i havent held down a job in 6 years.

Well I just got a cortizone injection into my butt, he feels it could be piriformis now but who knows. My legs are nurab and I feel a little weiry, I don't know why that would do that, maybe he put something else in there. Anyways I will let you know if it works thats what I have and maybe it will help someone else with the same symptoms.

Also what type of doctor are you seeing? When my problems first started I messed around with a family doctor for over two years, before seeing a spinal surgeon to review my case. He ordered further tests, tried injections, physical therapy, etc.

Has anyone tried injections or a tens unit?

pepper, how did you get into a spine surgeon? If your dr. wasn't helping you? I have struggled with this as well. As you know i am not getting very far this is the third time around with PT

I believe in changing DRs if you don't get your questions answered.
Many of us went through similar situations and if one DR does not offer you any answers - time to go and look for a Spinal Ortho Dr who specializes in Spinal surgeries/problems.
The way he treats you is not acceptable; if you in so much pain, you body tells you something. I am not a DR but I don't like your pain and that your pain radiates to the back of your leg. This means nerves may be involved.
If nerves involved - time is very important; don't wait for a long time, sometimes it can affect the final result even if you have surgery.

Please, take good care of yourself and good luck with it.
We are here for you 24/7, please don't hesitate to ask and share, will be glad to help you. People on this board a great and went through a lot themselves, so you can get a lots of support here.

Best of luck to you!

Backpainer

It may be sciatica. It would be a good idea to have it checked out. I had sciatica several years ago and my doctor prescribed an anti-inflammatory med and the pain was gone in a few days.

I hope you have a speedy recovery. Take care.

Sincerely Nadine:)

It possible that those discs or a disc that was torn did not heal on it's own and had further progressed and may be now pinching or pressing on the nerve. I assume those discs you refer to are in the lower part of your spine.. such as L3-S1?

I had a orthopaedic surgeon (general one) and she didn't do much for me either. I will say she sent me for injections though. But she offered me no alternatives and pretty much through her hanRAB up. She basically let me know without saying it she had done all she was capable or willing to do with her limited knowledge (spine wise) (and she would not dare admit that), that I finally got the message it was time to quit using her further and begin to educate myself to my back issues and find the right spine doctor that was willing to help me or at least try to help me.

So I urge you to go see another doctor so that you can have a new MRI done and see what is going on back there. Much can change over that 2 year period since your last MRI and you need to know what's increasing your pain level and how best to treat it.

Good luck.:)

My hubby went with me and demanded. Then they wrote the referral and I have been with them since 2006.

My docter faxed my info to a different orthopedic specialist and he faxed back that there is nothing they could do for my condition. So that is that, I now have to deal with a pain in the butt I can do nothing about. To go to work and have to keep going to my car to recline back is ridiculous to me anyways. I called my docter this morning and they told me I have to give the injection time, well ok, butt the knife is still in my butt and I am going crazy, does that matter. I don't know what to do, Its progressing so fast everyday and they have a hard time believing this because my reflexes are good. Makes me wonder if its not something else altogether.

pepper, thats what i should have done a long time ago, mine got the mouth as well not me. Example: My thyroid meRAB have been to high for almost a year noone except me being smart to demand to see the specialists and do labs again to find out noone else caught on, you really have to do things for yourself! Or at least be very pushy and i am going to let my new gp this as well without sounding crazy because i have dealt with this issue too long and even if they can at least say okay heres the deal this is whats up and you can ithier fix it or live with, i can't even get that.
Take care, Monkey
