Hello everyone, i'm at wits end trying to find out what's going on with my body. I'm not quite sure what's causing this reaction, but no matter what i eat, it surfaces again.

I believe the spur was some seafood soup that i had on Sunday this past weekend and since then, i have had hives, swollen lirabs & face, and itchiness all over. I've been to the ER twice now, and both times they put me on an IV and gave me a steroid shot to lower the symptoms. I've been taking double dosages of the medication they prescribed me to lower the symptoms whenever i eat something, but it just won't go away.

I've tried eating just rice, and it came up. I tried eating broccolli this morning and it came up again. There's gotta be something to catch whatever it is that's causing this bug...could you guys possible give any help? thanks...

did they give you a steroid dose pack to take after the shot? prednisone that tapers gradually for 7-10 days? Are you taking any benadryl?

I had something bad like this happen back in May. I took some Imodium AD while I had the flu. Within 30 minutes I broke out with red welts and hives all over my body. It was horrible. I was scared and drove myself to the clinic. They gave me a steriod shot and I was put on benadryl around the clock. Everytime the meRAB wore off I broke out in the hives. It went on for at least a week. I even got another steriod shot. The doctor told me it takes awhile for the allergen to get out of the body. Kind of scary huh? So don't be suprised if that is going on. Hang in there!

I would see your family doctor and ask for an epi-pen. You can self-inject if you have a sudden, severe reaction and then go to the emergency room.

I recommend seeing an allergist. Seafood allergies shouldn't be taken lightly as they can be life-threatening. My DD(8) has anaphylactic nut allergies. In our experience, every reaction is progressively worse. DD now reacts just from exposure to other people who've recently eaten cashews. We carry 2 epi-pens, benedryl, and an inhaler at all times. IMHO, ANYONE with food allergies that have the potential to be life-threatening should be treated by an allergist. If you do not have an allergist, call your family doctor and demand a referral to an allergist. In the interim, your family doctor should prescribe an epi-pen for you to have on hand.

As far as treating this reaction, I agree with everyone else. You should be on a taper of prednisone and should be taking benedryl every 4-6 hours daily for as long as needed.

Hello Jenny, from what you have said there seems to be something else going on here , and not just an allergic reaction? Were you not recommended to a Dermatologist?
You may be having an autoimmune reaction, triggered by an allergy, (Atopic) or a hypersensitivity to something.
An autoimmune reaction only occurs in people who carry the genetic predisposition to ever having one, and there are over 80 conditions, which can result from such an abnormal immune response to *self*. Of course you would never know if you carried this predisposition, until it happened!
The skin condition which manifests because of the autoimmune response, is simply the pathogenic result of that specific response in you.
It doesn't have to be an allergy or hypersensitivity (enviromental exogenous factors)to trigger this abnormal immune response to self tissues, it could also be caused through hormones, or thyroid dysregulation. (*self* or endogenous factors). Were you not forwarded to a dermatologist at all? Maybe you should go to your doctor again and ask to be referred to a derm?
