Severe abdominal pain

Hi,

I am posting on behalf of a family member.

They have severe abdominal pain which comes on in waves, usually after eating and even sometimes without eating. They have been referred for an endoscopy procedure, but this is taking a long time.

They have been given lansoprazole and gaviscon and co-codomol to manage the symptoms, but these arent really helping.

They stay away from fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol etc. Taking a really bland diet, eating small portions.

I believe it may be stomach uclers or somthing like that. The pain gets so severe paramedics have been called several times, but they cant really do anything until the endoscopy is done.

Any advice?

They take lansoprazole in the morning and evening before food. Also taking gaviscon, and co-codomol to manage pain, but its not very effective.

Your family member really needs the endoscopy to find out if it's an ulcer, where it is. Ulcers can hurt from food or from lack of food in the stomach. Once it is confirmed, your relative can be tested for H. Pylori bacteria that has been implicated in causing ulcers and a round of antibiotics can help stop them.

If the pain gets too bad, do go to the hospital as it could have perforated the stomach and gone into the abdomen....that is life threatening.

I have had some success with a diet of crackers, gingerale and soup. Ginger helps with nausea and the crackers and soup are very easy on the stomach and the liquid in the soup washes the crackers down and into the intestine quickly. The salt on the crackers helps to keep you from getting dehydrated as does the soup. It also cleans out the stomach so there is less to aggravate the ulcer. Helps me.

Whatever you do, don't take aspirin or drugs like ibuprofen(NSAIDs). They cause ulcers. Take acetaminophen(Tylenol is a brand name) for pain.

good luck and get that endoscopy soon.......Jenny

I had severe pain in my lower right side on a Saturday, i felt constipated and just in pain. I went to bed laying on my stomach and feeling i might vomit. Sunday I woke up and still hurt, I figured I gave myself a hernia and would call my PCP on Monday. I called Monday and they had me come in. She then sent me for a CAT scan just incase my appendix was about to burst. I then went back to work and my Dr. called me and told me to go to he ER my appendix was very enlarged and looked like it may burst. I could not believe I let that go for 3 days. I got very lucky . I drove home picked up my husband, packed a bag for the hospital and 4 hours later had surgery. I hope if your friend has any of the same symptoms that they go for a cat scan for a possible appendectomy. You never know :). I sure didn't think that was the problem.
