So I visited my family last week, and my brother-in-law foisted a Bell receiver and dish on me. He says it should be good to go as he did the card swap awhile ago (last fall?). He also pointed me here, looks like some good stuff.

I live way out in nowhere, so I don't want a Bell person to come out. A couple of guys nearby have Bell and can probably help me point the dish. What's the simplest way to open an account? I'm not sure I want this, so I'd like to avoid a long-term contract. Can I just call them and set up an account over the phone? What info are they going to need?

Just call them, they will set everything up by phone...

Since you will be opening an account using existing receiver there will be a 35$ transfer charge

You won't be eligible to any new clients promo BUT you will not have to sign any contracts

If you decide to buy another receiver (some are as cheap as 99$ vbrand new) you will have to sign a 1-2 year contract BUT will get all the new clients promo and rebates. You could call the next day your account as been set up and activate the receiver you got, at that point there won't be any transfer charge since you would have an account (transfer charge only applies when an account is opened with existing receivers)

Even if you live far it is possible that BellTV have a technican that could go in your area to set you up...if you choose the NO CONTRACT option (using the existing receiver only) or the 1 year contract you will have to pay the tech (99$). If you choose the 2 years contract they will install you 1 receiver and the dish FREE OF CHARGE

If BellTV doesn't have techs in your area you could also choose to hire a local compagny to do the work. You then fax the bill over to BellTV and they will pay you back up to 100$

I suggest you place the receiver next to a window, or on a balcony, where it would be easily accible rather than on the roof. Why? If there is snow on your dish that accumulates in the winter you will loose reception. If the dish is easily accible you can go just shovel it and you will get your reception back

just call 888-sky-dish to open an account. they will need osme information, no term agreement. If you want to add as an existing customer there isn't a term so long as you are self installing. you can even do it by web or phone if you like (2nd or more STB's) after you set up your account. Just remember your pin number.

No matter what option you choose (buy an extra one to get free client promo or use existing receiver) you have the option to install it yourself since the receiver is purchased. It is only when you rent that BellTV will force you to have a professionnal install

The person that gave you (or sold) the receiver will have to call BellTV (if he didn't do so already) to mention that he gave you (or sold) the receiver. If that's not done YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO ACTIVATE THE RECEIVER

So are you saying if I buy a new reciever ie. 9241 for $499 and add it to my account I am making a 1 or 2 year commitment? Even if there is no dish or wiring installation required?

I could understand if it were subsidized but at that price I dont believe it is. What is the basis for bell deciding the length of the commitment?

Thanks

BellTV policy is that all clients opening an account with PURCHASE RECEIVER or RENTAL RECEIVER must sign a contract

Why?

Since they will give you discount for signing up they have to make sure that it would be "worth it" for them as well, that you will stay long enought for them to cover the cost of the rebate they gave you

If you already have an account an PURCHASE a receiver you don't have to sign any contract. If you already have an account and RENT a receiver you have to sign a 1 year contract

What if you bought a new reciever yourself (never activated) and don't need installation, can you start a new account with NO contract and with no specials?

If if it's to OPEN the account, unless rules changed NO...

Since the receiver is considered NEW in Bell stock (since it was never activated in any account) you need to sign a 1 or 2 years contract

With a 1 year contract you will probably get no "new clients promo" and with a 2 years contract you will get all the promos + installation will be free

If you already have an existing account and you just wish to add that extra receiver you don't need to sign any contract
