My Belt is squeaking. 2001 Mercury grand marquis. Using a stethoscope, source of sound seemed to be coming from Tensioner. Took it off, spun it seemed good, but replace anyway feeling that maybe pressure is causing bearings to squeak.
Put back together, squeak still there. Sprayed belt lightly with water and belt got quiet, car ran good for about 1 minute, then squeak came back.
So, it's not bearings in the compressor, or other parts because with the belt quiet I would hear that and checking with stethoscope all parts, alt, comp,, crank, p/s, everything was quiet, once the water dried up (I only put a light mist) the squeak started again.
It's not the a/c clutch, put on the defrost, clutch engaged, squeak still there.
Seems to be coming from the a/c pulley?
Could it be a bad belt or the pulley itself? The belt is old, maybe 2 years, 60K miles. but it has no cracks or indications that it's bad?
Okay, tried the belt dressing, says on can "not recommended for serpentine belts", the squeak turned into more like a growl. Dumped soapy hot water, then rinsed with clean water, normal squeak came back.
I then decided to try the "bar soap' method. bar soap, hmm, shower gel lol? So I searched my luggage in the basement and BINGO, thanks the the Hilton, I found a small bar of soap. Road it on the ribbed side of belt with car running, more towards the facing front of car, squeak was starting to go away, but was still there. Coated the inside part of the belt (towards the engine) and wallah, it stopped, Been letting it run, still not squeaking.
I'm sure it's the belt, OR the compressor pulley (Damper?) will replace the belt this weekend and see If I can update here.... HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
