Serious question involving losing job and retirement. Help?

A friend of mine, his dad is one year away from retiring and he just recieved news that his position will be cut at the beginning of January 2009 - EXACTLY a year before he can start recieving retirement. He has been with the company for 15 years, makes a pretty decent amount of money and has seniority over a great deal of people (its a very large employer)

Is there anything that he can do to fight this? Absolutely ANYTHING?
