Serious question for 6620 owners

Can you tell me if the following is possible ?

- play a sound file (ideally, at least 10 secs long)
- hit the red button
- and dial a phone number without the playback halting

Unfortunately, I can't do this on my humble (but nevertheless beloved) 6600 - but I can on my mighty N80.

It's a mighty handy tool to have, as you can playback phone numbers you've recorded while dialling them at the same time.

I don't have my 6620 in front of me at the moment, but there's what I remember:

The 6620 can play MP3s and do other tasks without the sound stuttering. This includes using the camera or browsing the file system with FExplorer.

You can indeed dial numbers while a sound is playing, provided the phone is in silent mode or its equivalent. If the phone is in general profile, the sound of the DTMF will cause the sound to pause. Even if the phone is in silent, the sound will stop as soon as you press the send button to initiate the call.

D'oh !
Just tried it in Silent - but it doesn't work for my 6600.
I guess 6MB of RAM just wasn't enough to code for that kind of functionality.
Looks like I'll have to get a 6620 ... no bad thing I guess, except that: -

I'm in the UK with an O-2 contract SIM.
O-2 runs mainly on GSM-900.
But the 6620 runs on GSM-1800.
Solution ?
Get a T-Mobile contract SIM - they run on 1800.
Sure, but then I'll be paying for two contracts (my O-2 runs for another 8 months minimum).
The irony ?
My N80 runs brilliantly on 1800 - but truly appallingly on 900.
Thing is, I need a Nokia that'll playback after the red button's pressed - to carry on dialling from recorded numbers.
So the 6620 would have been a brilliant (and likable) solution .... except that it doesn't run 900 !

BWAAH! BWAAH!

I don't understand what you intend to do with it; what is "dialing from recorded numbers?"

Do you mean recording the DTMF of a previous number, playing it back, and then trying to input the numbers by hand just from the sounds? Or am I completely off base?

If you need the tri-band, you might try looking at the 6630. Even more powerful than the 6620, but it uses those DV RS-MMCs.

Why don't you put the phone number in the phone book and skip the sound file all together?

Not trying to be a smartass, just and honest question :-)

No, I'm given people's numbers in the course of voice calls.
I then need to dial them afterwards.
So I record the call and dial while playing back.

the 6620 cannot play sounds while on a phone call. I discovered this when trying to use one of those programs that stores your voicemail on your phone, instead of using your carrier's. Alot of the older s60 weren't capable of audio playback while in a call.

To solve your problem, though, when someone gives you a number in a call, dial it on the keypad. when you end the call, if you either 1. wait for them to hang up or 2. only hit the end key once then it will leave those numbers on the screen for you.

You can dial the numbers during the call which you receive the numbers. I don't understand where you're getting a sound file that plays a phone number in it to begin with?

I see.

I'd probably fall back to pen and paper for that, or just enter it into the phone book while on the phone with them.

You gain so much just by taking the steps to put it in the phone book. You can text it easily, finding the number is easy, and if they call you back it will show their name.

OK.
I'm not worried about calling DURING playback.
Just need to DIAL during playback - so it needs to be able to carry on playing back after pressing red.
All other options are non-viable, as it's all done while driving - so pressing record is fine, but trying to dial out long numbers isn't.

yeah, the recording thing seems silly. All you have to do is dial the # while on a call, and then after you hang up, then hit the green send key-it's all in the owners manual-hope that helps...

Except if you dial a number while on a call, the person on the other end get's to listen to those loud and nasty tones from the dialing.

Thw answer is yes, you can listen to a sound file and dial a phone number at the same time. I just did it. I launched FExlorer just to easily find a sound file. I started playing it. I then used the menu button to go back to the phone screen and dialed several numbers. I then used the menu button again to go back to the sound file, shut it down and also shut down FExplorer. This took me back to the phone application and the number was there waiting for me to press the Send button and make the call.

From what I recall, the 6620 can run several programs at the same time (does not stop the ones in the background). The problem arises when you try to play two sounds at one time. Only one application can control the speaker at a time.

Hehe ... just bought one (from eBay) - and you're right, the 6630 rox !
It's basically an N80 without the screen and cam res, and WiFi.
Awesome bit of kit and only UKP 80 delivered.
Looks like there's gunna be an N80 and 6600 up on eBay this weekeend.
