I want to learn how to compose classical music seriously. It is a life goal of mine. As it currently stands, I do not have a job and cannot afford professional musical lessons. What I need is a serious website dedicated to teaching advanced music theory. But the problem I'm having is all the websites that I've searched for just gives me "what" music theory is rather than "how" to apply music theory in my compositions.
I do not need a website that defines chords. I've seen thousands of those. I need a website that explains why each chord is necessary. I could sit there all day memorizing what a diminished chord is, but I really don't know WHY it is labeled that and WHERE the best spot that I should write it in. It's bugging the hell out of me!
Same with chord progressions. I know it is an important concept to learn, but it just feels as though I'm being spoon fed this information. Essentially, it's lacking real thought. I want to learn WHY one chord progression might be better than another in some situations.
Consonance and dissonance is another concept that is very vague to me. Most websites really don't go into enough depth. The same goes with general harmony. I must know the reason why. It is driving me nuts not having this crucial information.
I need any information on serious in-depth composition!
Thank you.
