does a cadet get to choose which branch they go into. (active, guard, or reserves)?

Most actually go into the National Guard, those are SMP cadets who are simultaneously in the National Guard and ROTC. If you accept an ROTC scholarship and stay on scholarship then you will most likely find yourself on active duty after graduating college.

It's your choice.

you will need to keep your grades up. you are eligible for a scholarship if you contract army. I recommend reserve or national guard. you can do this.
you will also take pt tests, train now.
depending on the job you would like to do in the army you will have years to decide. it depends on if you want to go active, if you want a career out of the army, etc. email me for anymore questions. my dad teaches rotc and i am a veteran.

I would contact St. John's Military Science department on Monday and start getting the paper work out of the way. A lot of people are doing ROTC and there's no enough scholarships for everyone. You should also workout now cause the PT is difficult and you will need to pass to get the scholarship. As for reserves or active duty, most people I know go active duty only a few go reserves (because of the type of degree they got and they were smart enough to have a choose)

It depends on the school, but I dare say that on average, about 80% or more cadets that commission do so into the Active Army. I know that out of the 16 of us that commissioned when I did, we had 13 Active and 3 Guard officers.

EDIT: Yes, you get to choose unless you accept a scholarship for one or the other. If you take an active duty scholarship, then you have to commission active and if you take a GRFD scholarship, you have to commission Guard/Reserve.
