sega genesis?

i have an old sega genesis that i'm trying to run on my t.v though everytime i hit the on button the sega screen comes up and all and the game loads though the screen is grey and the graphics are messed up to the point were you can't really make out much and the game play seems to be messed up too..

would anyone know why this is happening?
