seeing flashing white dots before for a good 5 minutes?

a few minutes ago I started seeing these flashing white dots when I opened my eyes making it hard to see very well, and they eventually went away 5 minutes later. what do they mean?
 
That used to happen to me alot when I was young. Weird, at the least.
My aunt said it was spirits and shit, so I cried.
They went away. (:
