The particular anime I'm searching for aired in the Philippines in heavily dubbed form in the late 90s, though it looks somewhat older. The details I can still remember are:
1. The relationship between the young orange haired (?) male protagonist and his robot is much like the one in Medabots
2. Using some sort of device (a watch maybe, or similar), the hero can order the robot to change its form or configuration.
3. In the first half(?) of the series, the boy is still quite incompetent in using the forms of his robot, building up to a conflict or something. In the second half, the story is more epic, with a conflict between robots and humans, and the hero falling in love with a human looking robot girl.
4. First half has art which is like it was made for kids, while the second half has darker and more mature themes.
