Seagate, Samsung, WD - which hard drive to choose (or avoid)?

In the somewhat reasonable price market for medium-capacity drives, say, 500 GB - 1 TB, which are the best drives? They seem to be a similar price, but WD seems cheapest, by a small amount.

Most important, which are the most reliable? Are any more flaky than others?

Next, what about performance?
Oh, yeah, I'm looking at SATA 3.0GB drives
