SE Compensator Review (A bit lengthy)

Just got a leftover 2010 FLHX with this same issue.

I have not started to discuss it with the dealer yet, was waiting for the 1000 mile service.

Has anyone had the SE part installed under warranty? Or does it need an actal failure before they do it? Seems that they agree it is a problem if it is standard on the 2011 model.

What tac should I use with the dealer?
 
This is the biggest issue I have had with my scoot and have sent letters and talked to the Harley rep on a couple occasions. The MOCO will not replace the stock comp with the new SE comp under warranty, even if the stock one fails. YOU can pay the difference if the stock one fails and replace it with the SE comp. THIS IS BS!!!! This is a safety issue in my opinion, as failure of the comp at freeway speeds could kill someone. Not to mention all the ring gear and starter gear teeth being mangled in the primary from kickback starts. A recall is in order and anyone that has replaced the comp with an SE comp should be reimbursed. The MOCO has heard enough complaints that replacing the old comp on the new 11' bikes warranted this change. Any lawyers out there interested in a class action suit?
 
Just ordered the SE one from Lake Shore HD.

My bikes still under warranty for another month but for $210 shipped, it's not worth my aggravation taking the bike to the dealer, arguing with them that that bang at start and the coffee can full of nuts sound until the oil warms up is NOT NORMAL. Plus what damage they can do to my bike while it's there for repair, if in fact they do replace the compensator. If it doesn't show, I don't trust dealers working on my bike.....

My question to the do it your-selfers, what did you use to hold the nuts while removing and installing/torquing the two gear sets??
 
Since my new SE Comp will be here on Thursday, I decided to pull the primary apart tonight. Pretty straight forward, although without the tool to hold the two gear set from turning, it may be slightly difficult. I had a friend at the machine shop fab me up a tool with the HD Tool dimensions.

Only thing I see ( or don't) see is 6 bolts holding the inner primary on per the original poster. I only see 5 bolts and that's without having one beer.

I'm debating on what to do, grind or loosen some bolts. Leaning towards the bolts and hoping that there's no leakage afterward.

On another topic, those Hot Toppers look good but their a bitch to remove without damaging them. Probably took longer to remove them from the primary cover then to remove the inner workings.
 
Just had mine replaced under warranty (major failure of the unit), and they didn't give me the SE unit free. Instead they charged the difference between stock and the SE unit which was roughly $120. Better than paying full price, but worse than if they had built it had just built it correctly with the SE unit in the first place!
 
I'm planning on doing the SE comp upgrade but I plan to throw on a chrome inner primary at the same time. If you read the instructions in the service manual, it states to remove the inner primary before you remove the stator cover. But if loosening it works, then all the better.

Years ago when I worked on cars and trucks, on the small block chevy, when we had to pull just one head we would pull the intake bolts on that head side, then loosen the other side and pry the intake up slightly and wedge a punch under the end rail to hold it up. Would shoot some liquid sealer in the end rails before installation and a new gasket on the one side of the intake then slap on the head, torque up and pull the punch, fill the gap with sealer and put the intake bolts in and torque up. It always worked without leaks.
 
Did everything come in the kit for the SE Compensator conversion? Does it use the original spring pack & ramp assembly? Besides the 40274-08 kit, primary gasket & oil, is there anything else I need to purchase
