Screenshots not working with Macbook Pro?

I have a new Macbook Pro, and whenever I try to do a screenshot the picture just shows a gray and white checkerboard pattern.
I'm using command+shift+3. (Command+shift+4 didn't work either)
Is there something I'm doing wrong? This is my first Mac so I'm still getting used to it.
