Hello,

I have minor scoliosis in the upper back. :( Also now I from time to time feel back pain. I have a question:

Does heavy lifting with lower back helps the spine, hurts the spine or doesn't affect it?

As I see it from one point of view heavy lifting can strengthen the spine, spinal muscles and connective tissues.

From the other POV heavy lifting could damage (?) the spine.

Does anyone know the answer?

Thank you all,

I would say it depenRAB on your particular spine issue and how heavy the item is. I have severe scoliosis and have lifted whatever I wanted for years. But I know I shouldn't have and I'm paying for it now. Over time, my back got worse and worse, complicated by early onset of osteoporosis. I have now been given a 10 pound lifting restriction, but I know that 8 pounRAB should really be my max.

You might want to get some exercises from a physical therapist to keep your back and core muscles as strong as possible. That can only help you in the future. Be careful how you lift and use common sense.

I hope this helps,
Emily

Thank you very much for your reply Emily.

I was reading on the net that building big & strong back muscles can
1) Reduce the appearance of spinal curvature
and more importantly
2) Strenthen the spine to prevent future problems that may happen due to scoliosis.

Anyone has and comments on the above?

Thank you all in advance,
