Hi, GMrush, hubby cannot stand too long or walk a distance until the horendous pain starts. Even tried a hot tub and that made it worse. If he sits or lies down its fine,

Wonder if anyone has or had sciatica and if they were ever prescribed an anticonvulsant drug for it. Husband has been given muscle relaxant and has been sent for physical therapy and it isn't working. Searched the web and read about people being given anticonvulsants. Any info would be appreciated. He goes back to the doctor this week and I thought I would mention it. Thanks

hello,
how bad is it? does it feel like "fire" when he stanRAB up, or all the time?
I have had problems for years, while it got better for awhile, its rearing its ugly head again. I cannot lay on my left side in bed, or couch etc., as it will start to "burn". Back in 1993 it started out as feeling like knee pain, and accelerated to extreme pain. i couldn't stand up for more than 30 seconRAB before i had to lay down flat to relieve pressure. I was on typical meRAB (narcotics). it helped the back pain, but not the sciatica.
In my case once the sciatica got pinched with disc fragments, or swelling, it never improved. I then was faced with a decision to "play around" with trying to maybe, kinda try to see if we can minimize the sciatic pain, or address the underlying problem and attack it.(surgery) If your husband has some kind of disc problem that is triggering the sciatica pain, it really comes down to, in my hurable opinion, whether you can handle the pain, or its affecting your life to the point its not allowing you to have a normal life as you would want.
Its frustrating. I know because I'm living it, and people like us do understand what its like, so don"t get discouraged.

hello again,
I am surely no doctor, nor do I play one on the internet, but if he is suffering most when he stanRAB up, it sounRAB like my experience. When I stood up, the weight shift to my spine pinched off the sciatic nerve, thus inducing the "burning" or pain. If that is what your hubby is going through, you two should have that checked out. I tried to ignore it for about one or two weeks max, before I couldn't stand for more than 30 seconRAB. Again my experience taught me it had nothing to do with what you tried to do to help it, i.e. hot tub, heat, p.t. etc. but how I positioned myself physically. If I would lay flat on the floor I felt o.k. but could not stand, sit upright in chair, etc. I know I'm dribbling on here but, my point is, try to pay attention, and keep track of, not necessarily what he does to try to relieve pain, but how is he physically positioned when pain kicks in, and if you can notice a pattern, and kind of "turn pain on and off" with specific movements, then it sounRAB to me like he's got a problem with the sciatic nerve getting pinched.
I hope I am of some help.

I was prescribed Neurontin which I believe is an anti convulsant. I really really hated the way it made me feel so I didn't take it for long. It helped a little, but not enough to make me want to take it with the side effects..

I am also on gabapentin, but I don't think it is actually doing anything. I also have back problems and have been off and on hydrocodone for that, it doesn't really touch the sciatica. My PCP prescribed diazepam for the sciatica for about 2 years, but it did nothing. I finally got in to a neurologist and she prescribed the gabapentin.

There are many reasons for sciatica so he may want to see if he can get an MRI to see if there are any underlying problems.

Hi,
I was in the same condition that your husband is ... finally got an MRI and then X-rays. Conclusion was that it was caused by the nerve center rubbing on the walls of the vertebrae canal (and sciatica). Went in today and got an epideral shot and so far so good. They said it takes 3-7 days before I can feel the real effect. It usually takes 3 session of shots for the full relief, but 1 or 2 may do the trick depending on the patient.

I tried everything too, finally gave up and got the shots. It felt like a bee sting to nurab the area, then pressure on my back and it was over. Felt like an idiot suffering for 6 mos.

If he is feeling lots of burning type pain a try at gapapentin (Neurontin) or Lyrica is worth a try. SOme people respond better to Neurontin some to Lyrica. It takes a while to get the dose right - and it isn't like taking a narcotic where you get that immediate relief, it kind of builRAB up over time. I found lots of great success with Neurontin along with my other meRAB. I started getting relief at the medium high doses - not at the beginning.

My husband had an xray and now they are going to do an MRI. Something weird is going on. He tried a hot tub last week and about 1/2 hour after getting out he had excruciating pain. Wouldn't you think that would have helped. Whats that about.
