I went to the er with leg pain and had an mri done. It showed bulging at l3/l4. l4/l5/l5s1. Also disk degenerartion was evident since Im 56. I went to see my regulsr dctor and she istreating it as sciatica and have me on percocet 5/325 and 10mg valium. Ive been a waitress, bartender all my life and am no way a "wussy; when it comes to pain but thia ia kcking my ass. the percocet and valium are barely touching the pain and I hate to call the doctor and tell her this. It seems every doctor now a days thinks ppl are a pill jnkie.Any ideas on how to go sbout the issue with pain.

I had a similar situation with some arthritis and bulging disc in the lurabar region. I went to see a chrioprator which helped. He put me on the stretcher rack as I call it. It is one of those that stretches you while your feet are tied down and you are holding on with your hanRAB. It pulls and lifts. After numerous treatments the pain from that went away. By the time I had surgery there was no mention of a bulging disc. Another possibility is if you pile pillows up on the bed or floor, lay across them to stretch you lurabar area creating a sort of 'u' shape with your body. It will take time and not an overnight fix but it helped me. I also used a lot of heat. I figured that with the heating pad, it kept the blood circulating thru the area.
Good luck. It will take time. I have found after nearly 4 years into this, it is still not over.

The injections can certainly be helpful in some cases and for some people. Have you had a full evaluation by a neurosurgeon and/or orthopedic spine surgeon? Not just for surgical options but to evaluate what treatment options are really viable.

Hi Day

I have several discs in the lurabar region of my back that are very painful. I am not suffering from sciatic pain now but I have in the past. I took medication that reduced the swelling and the sciatic pain stopped after a few days.

I have an appointment soon to see a Pain Management doctor to discuss getting steriod injections in my lower back. My Neuro surgeon said many people receive pain relief after the injections.

I hope you have a quick recovery from the pain. Take care and I hope you stay in touch.

I have had several MRIs of my entire spine, neck and brain. The Neurologist talked to me about different options but suggested I try the injections to see if they help.

Be careful of those shots in the back. I had them a couple of months ago....they hit a nerve.....I was holding the nurses fingers and felt like I was going to break them!!!! The shots did not help. jmo

Of course you have sciatica, BUT pain pills won't fix it because they have to fix the lurabar region first. I hate dr's! Did the doc give you any anti-inflammatory medication?
I had a dr that passed out pain meRAB like it was nothing, but never addressed the problems. Now I have a new doc who addresses the problems but won't give me anything for pain. I wish I could find a happy medium.
Hope you're feeling better today.

Was it a Neurologist or a Neurosurgeon you saw? If you haven't seen a Neurosurgeon or Orthopedic Spine Surgeon consider a few consultations to get opinions. No, with that said, just know that you may get different surgical suggestions (type, etc) but then you choose the one that you are most comfortable with if surgery is a viable option.
