sciatica pain and effectiveness of epidurals

There are so many helpful people on this forum and I am hoping someone can answer a couple of questions. Five years ago I was diagnosed with two hernitated discs (L4-L5) Well, 15 days ago I have had sciatica and still am in intense pain. They gave me vicodin but it is not touching the pain. I had an epidural 4 days ago, and had much less pain in my leg until today. It came back with a vengance. I am scheduled for another epidural in three days. I am supposed to be leaving on a cruise the very next day. Has anyone had anything similiar and if so, what helped long term??? Would you advise going on the cruise, or canceling?

Any suggestions, or personal experiences would greatly be appreciated!!!
 
I had the series of 3 epidurals and it took my bi=laterial leg pain down to a low pain range. I think you should try the second one since the first one helped. The doctor will probably put a little more medicine in this time. By the 2nd one, I was doing great. It has lasted 4 months and is wearing off now and I will repeat.
 
a chiropractor relieved my pain but it didn't last but gave me huge relief. I ultimately had surgery on L3,L4 and L5. No more pain down the leg. the epidurals did nothing for me.
We just returned from a cruise to Alaska. I was thinking of canceling because I get severe body cramps. I am glad I went.
 
I can tell you I had several transforaminal epidurals before my Laminectomy surgery in March 2009. They did help for a few months at a time. I just got another one last Wednesday for sciatica pain down my left leg so bad I could hardly walk. I go back for a second one next Wednesday. The first one did take away 90% of the sciatica so I hope the next one does the trick for a few months or forever. Give another one a chance and Good Luck!
 
Thanks! I hope these really work for you! I had my second one today and right now there is just a little pain in the leg, but not too bad! I am scheduled for another one next Thursday. That will be 3 in 3 weeks. I hope that is ok!!!
