A few months ago my sciatica nerve problem suddenly went from bad to very bad which caused me to be bedridden for five weeks waiting for MRI approval, surgery, etc. If I tried to get up and around, I would start having spasms within a couple of minutes. Anyway, very early on when I was bedridden, my sense of smell changed to where I would only have one smell. Still today, it remains this way. It's a smell that's hard to describe - it's neither bad nor good, but it would be nice to know if the house was on fire or whatever. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi, sorry I've never heard of this. I'm not sure that sciatica could cause something like that being it's in the head area, as sciatica only affects the lower body. Unless maybe you also have a cervical spine problem? Maybe there's a possibility that could be related? I dont really know, though. I do know I get times where I smell strange things or smell things really strongly that others don't, but I usually get a migraine shortly after.

you might check elsewhere trying to get a dx for your sense of smell. maybe an ent doc would be a place to start.
i have had a sciatic nerve problem for almost 40 yrs now, and never had that problem with smell....hope your pain gets better, hang in there and i do know what awful pain you are in........bevann

Thanks for your replies. Only about 15 minutes ago did I smell my food the way it should smell, so maybe things are turning around. I actually had the operation a few months ago, and haven't been in any pain except for a rare pain in my foot that last only a few seconRAB. After reading some of the posts here, I feel extremely grateful for my situation. (40 years Bevann - my goodness - I can't imagine!!) Chris

Maybe thats whats going on with me. I have noticed this wierd smell for about 3 months now. At times it smells like someone took a pile of dirty clothes, set them on fire, then threw an old tire on top. I know!! Sometimes I think I,m going nuts too. I also notice a sour smell at times, esp. when I,m in bed. I change my sheets at least once a week, sometimes more often. I have night sweats, so maybe it,s related to that. I have had SI for years now. I,m a retired nurse and have been diagnosed with a herniated disk, but refuse to have surgury. I, ve seen too many of those go bad, or not help at all and at my age(66), I don,t want to be bedridden the rest of my life. The past two days I have been in agony. Lortab and Flexeril helps some, but I feel like I can,t do anything without causing a flareup.
