hi ev'one
I was diagnosed with Sciatica after visiting the hospital with bad back pains and a burning feeling running down my left leg. The first visit two days before I was diagnosed with muscle spasm. Bit things got really worse and the pain down the left leg is unbearable. I have been put on muscle relaxants and pain relievers and would like to know how long does it take before the problem goes. Also should I try the exercises on the web. Its been two weeks bed rest and still the pain is there,...also some nurabness between knee to ankle. Share any thoughts please:confused:

tbagz1,

Welcome to the boarRAB and I am sorry to hear you are having sciatica problems like many of the rest of us.

Especially since you are experiencing nurabness in your lower leg, I would suggest that you visit your doctor and ask for an MRI and X-ray. It is possible that you may have herniated a disc and if so, doing exercises may make the problem worse. If you do have a herniated disc, you should get to an orthopedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon for an evaluation.

Some herniations can be healed with time and conservative treatments like physical therapy. Other times surgery will be necessary, but the normal course is to exhaust all conservative treatments unless there is urgency.

You will find a wealth of information on these boarRAB!

Thanks a whole lot. couple questions,....should I go for the MRI ASAP or wait untill Ithe pain subsides? Is this painassociated with what is commonly called Pinched nerve? Do you thimk I should resume work or should I wait for the pain to go away?

tbagz1,

If it were me in your situation, I would really push the doctor to do an MRI ASAP, and I would emphasize that you have nurabness in your lower leg. If you have a herniated disc, it is possible the disc is pushing on or pinching one of your nerves or nerve roots in your lower back. The MRI is the best way to find out if this is the case. As far as being able to work, that would be good to discuss with your doctor. I am not sure what kind of work you do, but be aware that if you are doing any activity and the pain worsens, you should probably not do that activity at least until the pain subsides.

HTH!

Hi
I have the same kind of problem as yourself. Mine started with a slip on a step. I felt the pain go through my spine I then developed bad back ache and painful left leg. Spent most of the time laying on the bed. This doesn't help at all. I have had an xray at the hospital this showed I had a sciatica problem. Took my xray to an osteopath who treated me and the pain left my back. ...3 days later I still have the pain in my left leg. I have pain killers and muscle relaxants. Having read other message boarRAB tomorrow I am going for a run. Also a lot of people suggest a book Ali's Back Book which gives excercises to strengthen the back. Be pleased to share any information with you
