...single mom? I must have seen five or six horrible stories that I can't shake lately. They are terrible tragedies of a mom going to work, leaving her child with a live-in boyfriend, and the criminal raping and/or abusing the child. Some of these stories end with the death of the child and some end with a child having to carry this violation around for a lifetime. It seems that no child is too young.

You add these news stories to my personal experience of thinking I found my perfect relationship--we were just alike and soooo in love. We have kids and start a family and only two years later, he screams at me everyday of my life and one day his hands are around my throat and I'm diving for the phone to call 911.

Thankfully, I'm out of that relationship but how can you ever learn to trust again? My kids are my life and I don't know what I would do if something happened to them. I thought I could "identify" an abuser but I obviously can't (my ex was very charming and chivalrous at first). How do you protect yourself from being one of the mothers who comes home to a tragedy? Are these high-risk relationships or are the pedophiles just that clever? Should I just give up on love until my kids are grown? What did you do? Please share your story if you have one.
