Last Monday night/Tues morning I began having this awful burning in my chest, into my upper back, etc. It scared me so bad, I went to the ER, I thought I was having a heart attack! They did an EKG, cardiac enzymes, Nitro, the whole nine yarRAB. I have SEVERE anxiety as well, they ended up putting me in the step down ICU for observation, my heart never showed anything strange, etc. I had 4 EKG's. All looked well they said.
The doc told me he thought it was something to do with Indigestion, Gastro issue, I went home the next day and felt some burning sensations, etc. He put me on Prilosec, I don't see my Doc until the 3rd of March.
I did fine for a few days and last night the burning spell happened again. It feels like a blow torch in my chest, skin even feels hot. Like I have I drank acid. I have some burning in upper stomach too. I had Esophagitits about 20 yrs ago and had that tube run down my throat, but I can't remeraber if it felt this bad?
I am so scared I don't have anything come up in my throat or atnything. I wonder if its Angina? It just comes on for no reason, I can be just sitting and it hits me in spells. I feel okay otherwise, but I am scared to death! Does this sound like GERD? Could it cause this much pain and burning??
I just panic so bad when it hits me?

I'm sorry for your pain.
I have Gerd and it is very painful at times..exactly as you describe.
I take prescription Protonix and it does help.
I was diagnosed with severe reflux about 12 years ago.
Most of mine is caused by stress..I have found that out!
I get bad chest pains, and since I also have IBS, I do get stomach pains also.
You might try Protonix..it helps me more than any of the others.

Good luck..I know how you feel!

Did you burn all over your chest, like you really can't pin point the area? I also burn in my upper back as well....
I am scared to death.

Hi Rhiannon:

I never had as severe burning as you describe, but I had burning in my throat and the pit of my stomach. Did you eat anything the night before that might have caused an attack of reflux on an already irritated esophagus. I remeraber when I first got diagnosed with this and before I really understood what was happening, I was taking Pepcid on my own (waiting for the doctor's appt.). I was feeling a lot better and had not experienced any heartburn for about five days when I decided to drink a V8 juice. That really burned and set me back for a few days. It might be that your PPI started to help but you ate or drank something acidic and had what I call an "attack" of hearburn.

I felt I had lost control of my body until I began to understand what was happening to me better and what causes reflux. Sometimes we can pinpoint the cause and sometimes it seems to have no cause or trigger at all. It is quite frustrating.

I hope you find the answers and reassurance you need. Read all you can about reflux. It does not sound like it is your heart. They'll probably run GI tests and figure out it is something related to episodic relaxing of the LES and reflux.
