Scared Shi*less of joining the army?

Ive always wanted to join the army since i was 6 years old, im 22 nearly and this summer i plan on joining the royal irish regiment, im scared shi*less of getting killed or limbs taken off me but i know its something i have to do and all my life when something bad has happend with my friends/family or strangers i was there to help and i feel that if im in afghanistan and something bad happens i want to be there, do my best to make a difference. Ive always been protective of women and friends.
Does this sound crazy or does it make any sense ?
