Saving money abroad!

I'm on a Virgin Mobile contract with an HTC Desire S, and I'm off on holiday to Menorca in a few weeks! My Roaming is already active, but I'll be switching off my mailbox, as I incur extra costs when people leave me messages, whether I pick them up or not.

I'd like a little advice on how to avoid exorbitant data costs, as when abroad, I'll be paying ?5/10Mb, or
I can buy an 'EU Pass' which is ?10/day...still pretty expensive.

Is it best to disable the Internet to stop anything running on the'phone from downloading data, and if so how is that done? (Virgin can do it while I'm abroad, but I'd be interested to know how to do it manually - there are loads of services running merrily in the background - which ones are safe to stop?!)

Also, if I wish to use a navigation app such as Google Maps, is this downloading on the fly, incurring
costs?

I have an app called Loaction which seems to allow me to buy and install maps on the SD card - presumably just pin-pointing with GPS is not the same as downloading data, and therefore cost nothing?

How come data downloads are so expensive outside the UK?!!

Any advice would be appreciated!!

I have recently come across a setting in my 'phone 'Data Roaming' ON/OFF. Is this the answer I'm looking for, as in will it stop the 'phone accessing data abroad, but allow me to make 'phone calls, and also continue to use Location with installed maps and GPS?

oh, and question part 2...there are loads of apps out there on Android Market which I'm keen to install...what are the chances that any particular app, even with good reviews, could damage my 'phone in any way, and if it did, is the app always uninstallable, returning the 'phone to it's pre-installed state?
I ask because I've seen plenty of screwed up PCs, and a Smartphone does have an Operating System.....is there a site which lists BAD apps?

Regards,
KG
