sanyo DRW-500 will play burned dvds but not retail dvds?

i have a sanyo DRW-500 dvd recorder and it will only play home made dvds it wont play dvds from a store it will ether say no disk or disk error it is a Reagen 1 DVDs with a Reagen 1 player
