Sanding down and painting my first car.?

I have a 1964 impala that I bought and doing the work to it my self. The body is in pretty good condition, no rust at all really, theres a little spot here and there nothing to bad. I want to sand it down and paint it my self. Before I start sanding do I need to clean the body at all ? What grits should I use to sand it down ? I just bought a set of dura block sanding blocks the 7 piece set is that good enough or do I need a da sander to, if so whats a good brand ? Please help me out and give me some tips and advice. Thanks
