Samsung vibrant 3g / Edge connectivity issues?

So I have the Samsung Vibrant for T-mobile and at first when I got it, I used to get 3g connection but now I RARELY get 3g and it often uses Edge which is very very slow, sometimes to the point of useless. Anyway to fix this?

Also if it has anything to do with the Sim card that comes with is, because my Avatar has stopped working and that's an issue with the sim card so idk if that would help
