Samsung Omnia 7 vs all!

Hey all,

(My first meaningful post here)

I'm reaching end end of my patience with my series of crap flip phones, and am now better able to rationalize the expense of having a cell phone contract. Furthermore, I have a Zune HD, which I am very fond of. So currently I am currently thinking that getting a new Windows Phone 7 would make a ton of sense. I guess I am most fond of getting a phone that will be long lasting, well made, and have an OLED screen (I've fallen in love with one on my Zune HD).

So to me, the best option seems to be getting a unlocked Samsung Omnia 7 at pretty great expense. But when I ponder what else I could get for the upwards of $700 I would be spending on phone hardware, I falter.

I could go for the nearly the same internals/screen but a crappy plastic Samsung Focus, but I don't want to undertake a long term commitment with subpar hardware.

I could just scratch the whole WP7 thing and just get an iPhone 4. The iOS dev ecosystem is great, minus Apple's frustrating meddling. The hardware is fantastic as well, and the screen has such nice resolution. The phone itself would be cheaper than getting an Omnia.

WebOS doesn't seem to strike me as having hardware nearly as attractive as a Samsung Omnia 7 or a iPhone 4, leaving us with the same crappy hardware as a Samsung Focus.

I guess I'm not super interested in Android for my first smartphone, for random personal reasons.

Sorry that was so long! I just confused what to do because stupid Samsung Omnia 7 is so expensive to get in the US. THanks much for your time!

focus is plasticiky but same hardware as the omnia 7
iphone is the best phone all rounder present
and
webos is like an acquired taste.

Yeah, thats what I had been thinking. I really don't want to go with Apple though. So I guess I should continue to pursue the Omnia.

I talked to Overseas Electronics, a chicago company that will be selling the Omnia, and he said that they would probably be getting them next Tuesday. Also, he said that he didn't know whether it would be the 8 or 16 GB one. However, they list the phone or $400 more than it is available on Mobilecityonline, who I've talked to and they don't know when their getting their phone. Mobilecity also said the first set the will probably get is the 8 GB version first, which is awfully small.

I JUST WANT A 16 GB SAMSUNG OMNIA 7 FOR REASONABLE PRICE! GAH!

Reghardware gave the Omnia 7 a lame 70 out of 100 score rating. The 9700 Bold got 75 here, the HD7 scored 80, the Galaxy S scored 85 and the HTC Desire scored 90.

This sounds like something you should get on a discount or a contract, but not at a full price.

Engadget gave the Omnia an 8 out of 10, while the HD 7 got only a 6 of 10. Also, I read the Reghardware review, and it seemed like they didn't have any real knocks against the phone. If you can point out to me the specific things that they say detract from the phone, other than the camera, I'd be happy to reconsider, but the review doesn't make sense to me

Basically 70 means they don't have any knocks on the phone. The iPhone 4 scored 75 by the way. If they got any knocks, it scores lower. Its just that it isn't outstanding to move to the 85 or 90 range.

First of all, its not upward of $700 but $800. Like $840 the last time I asked.

The phone seems to have all these sharp corners that catch into things.

But then again, it does look good, and doesn't look as cheap as the Focus. I do feel that however, on a day to day grind, the Focus with its thin, plastic construction and rounded corners is actually more livable, easier to slip into holsters and such. This is my experience with living with the Galaxy S which also has a thin, plastic shell. With holsters my experience with metal phones is that the paint on the corners tend to wear out.

You said you can justify a contract so why pay full price for something that may be released by a carrier soon any way, get the focus or Htc surround for the time being Htc is better then samsung any way IMHO.

You would be crazy if you spend 700 bucks on a phone. Go on ebay and get a droid or the phone there as it will be cheaper. Never buy from Verizon at their retail price.

I think it's best not to be an early adopter of Windows Phone 7. It could be a complete success like the iPhone or a total flop like the Kin. Android and iOS (and BB Torch!) would be a better investment at this point in time.
