Samsung Intercept with Virgin Mobile or other options?

Within a month or so, I'm thinking about buying my first smartphone. I've been researching and researching trying to find an Android phone that is no-contract to help me financially for now. The Samsung Intercept with Virgin (that great 25/month deal) seems like the only one I can find so far. My questions are:

Are there any other phones similar to this in price with service also? $250 or cheaper for phone(android os) and roughly $25-40 a month service focusing on unlimited data/text. If not, I want to know how this phone works on Virgin Mobile. I know it's only been out for a month but I cannot figure out the 'catch' to this good to be true $25 a month plan. I am guessing the coverage. I live near a big city, and my area is all shaded for voice/data. I don't travel to smaller areas much.

I don't mind if the phone lags a bit and there's a few bugs. This is going to be my first phone and I want to go as cheap as I can focusing on data/txt only. I don't talk on the phone much.

Any kind of advice for Samsung Intercept (with Virgin Mobile) appreciated! :)
