Samsung Impression won't charge.?

So, my brother just gave me his Samsung Impression and it was fully charged from the night before. However, when I try to charge the phone, it does not retain a charge. I put it on the charger an hour ago, and now it has less battery life than before. I really would like to know how to fix this because I'm heading back to school soon and won't be home until Christmas time.
