I am looking for a new phone and I cant decide between the blackberry bold 9780 (rogers) or the samsung galaxys captivate (rogers). I like both phones but I like how the blackberry has the blackberry messenger, but I also like the swipe txting feature on the samsung galaxys captivate. I have never had a blackberry before and I haven't had a android before eather. I know I will get used to each phone cause I love technology but I just cant decide which one to get.

Of the two, the Captivate. Much more modern OS, and there's no reason to tie yourself to BlackBerry Messenger if you're not already using it. The Bold 9780 is based on an old processor and an old OS. Just be aware: Samsung likes to abandon Android phones, so don't be surprised if you never get Android 2.3 or later.

A few tips of advice, though. First: what about the iPhone? It still arguably has the best touchscreen keyboard out there, and it has a better display than the Captivate (much sharper, not so oversaturated). There's the front camera, too; the Captivate doesn't have that. And Apple tends to support the OS much longer than most Android phone makers do, so you'll probably have updates for the next 1.5 to two years.

If you still want Android, there's also the Nexus S coming out by March and some newer phones that might be out at the same time. The Nexus S is very similar to the Captivate, but it has a front camera, some NFC wireless... and more importantly, the OS upgrades are controlled by Google, not by Samsung, so you can actually expect some long-term support. Rogers' roadmap for future Android phones isn't clear right now, but it should be easier to predict in February.

Rogers have the Samsung Captivate on Froyo upgrade now. If you don't want to go with the official Froyo upgrade on the Captivate, there are tons of other ROMs to fiddle around with. Rumor has it the Galaxy S is also slated for Gingerbread, the reason for it is because the Nexus S already did much of the porting work for it and all it takes is just port Touchwiz on top.

Android has many BBM like messengers, many of whom also have an iPhone equivalent, so your buddies on either iPhone or Android can group chat. They include Kik Messenger (also available on the Blackberry but RIM kicked it out of App World), Beluga and WhatsApp. There are also your typical GTalk and Yahoo Messenger apps too.

Between the Blackberry 9780 and the Captivate, its not just because Android is also the more modern OS of the two, but also because the Captivate hardware is also much more modern and that combination of hardware and software gives the Captivate the edge here. It seems that you love technology, and I feel that down the line, you might end up rooting and flashing ROMs and so on, which is part of the Android culture mania.
