Samsung Galaxy S3 users are getting the Android 4.2.2 software update in August, several months after Google released the “Jelly Bean” software. The new system software is coming to the Galaxy S3 so late in fact that the phone will have already been discontinued by Samsung by that time. And the Android 4.2.2 software will have likely been retired by that time as well, with Android 4.3 on the horizon.
It’s been a long strange trip for Galaxy S3 users, who bought the most popular Android smartphone and mistakenly believed they were getting the current Android experience and feature set with it. Instead the S3 has been running a years-old version of the Android software which made the phone obsolete from day one. Samsung has been promising for some time that the Android 4.2.2 update was just around the corner, and SamMobile says that this time it’s true, with an August release.
The delays have been blamed on the fragmentation of the Android platform, as Samsung had changed up the Android system software so much to fit with its hardware that subsequent releases from Google such as Android 4.2.2 were physically incompatible and couldn’t be installed without major code modifications from Samsung itself.
