Samsung Captivate or iPhone 3GS?

I am thinking about getting an upgrade from my current phone, the Samsung Mythic. These are the two phones that I have narrowed down and I just can't decide which one will be better for me. The reason why I'm looking into the iphone 3gs rather than the iphone 4 is because it's way cheaper now and I personally don't like the iphone 4 that much.

For the Captivate, I like how it is heat-sensitive, a touch phone, has a text messaging thread, 5mp camera, and has the new swipe feature to make texting easier. Although, the main thing that I don't like about the Captivate which makes me want to get the iPhone is that I'm not sure if there will be as many apps as there are for the iPhone and that I don't know if it is able to sync and play music I bought off of iTunes.

For the iPhone, I like how I could easily play my music I bought from iTunes (so I don't have to carry around my iPod), is heat-sensitive as well, has a text messaging thread, takes pictures fast, and has all of the apps which I've wanted to own and use for the longest time. The only bad thing is that the camera is only a 3mp and that I don't know if I could text with a landscape qwerty keyboard. (Is that possible, does anybody know? And does anyone know if I can send pictures through text?).

I really don't know if I should upgrade to a new android phone or to the older iphone....
Which do you think would be better suited for me? I am a high schooler if that helps anyhow
Oh yeah, and I always drop my phone on accident so should that mean I should stay away from the iphone since it's made of glass or would those heavy-duty Otterboxes help to protect it? I don't think the Captivate would shatter as badly or at all if it's dropped numerous times. I'd hate to screw up a new phone so quickly after a few accidental drops :/
