Samsung Captivate and Sim Card/Data plan Help?

If i was to purchase a samsung captivate and insert my att simcard in it would i automatically be charged a data plan ? because i have unlimited texting and from what i heard that counts as a data plan. O and will the phone even work for the simple calling and texting without a data plan ?
