Hey everyone! I have been having pain in my left shoulder for about 8 months but I kept putting off going to a doctor until yesterday. The doctor told me that he thought I had tendinitis in that shoulder and he gave me a cortisone shot and prescribed 750MG of Salsalate twice a day. He wants me to come back in 6 weeks for a checkup and he said if I was still experiencing pain that he may send me to have an MRI to check if it is my rotator cuff. I have never taken this kind of medication before and the doctor did tell me if I experienced diarrhea or ringing in the ears to stop taking Salsalate. My question is has anyone here taken that medication and if so did it help with your pain? I appreciate all replies. :)

I noticed that my post has been moved to general health. Actually the reason I posted in the Arthritis board is not only because of the type of medicine I was prescribed but also because my doctor is concerned I have developed arthritis. So I am a little confused about the move.

Salsalate is an NSAID med on the order of ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and others. I haven't taken salsalate in particular, but I have taken other prescription-strength and over-the-counter NSAIDS for various reasons. These drugs work extremely well to alleviate the inflammation which causes the pain. More inflammation = more pain and vice versa.

Of course, as with most drugs, there are related side effects that you may or may not experience, and some are more serious than others. Always follow your MD's advice about the use of any prescription NSAID.
 
Actually, salsalate's chemical name is disalicylic acid; also known as salicylsalicylic acid.
Aspirin's chemical name is acetylsalicylic acid.
They are two different chemical products, although they are related.
