Safe way of retrieving old Yahoo chat logs?

Hello, I have some old chat logs that upon opening them, is just a whle bunch of symbols instead of the actual chats. Is there any way I can retrieve these old chats in a readable form? There are options to download some binary files from the internet but are they safe? Please help. Thank you
