Safe, reliable Car. Help! pleeeeeease!?

Hi, i recently got into an accident. Luckily, it wasn't my fault. I was driving a 1995 BMW 525i. I really miss my car =/ Well now, my dad said he might look into buying a different car since my car might be totalled. Well i asked him if can get an Acura Integra. It's fuel efficient, reliable and fun to drive. However, my dad was against the idea. He said he'd refused to buy me a small japan made car since they're light, thus being unsafe. I would prefer a used European car rather than American


I was thinking:
2003 VW GTI
2004 Golf TDI

But i know those two aren't so reliable as i have read online.

or a 1994 bmw 3 series.

I plan to learn stick shift on this car also.

PLease help me!
