S83 Boulevard Top Speed

Hey,

Got my S83 Boulevard this year and after I broke it in found out how great the bike really is! Seems like top speed maybe around 117? 0-60 is fast and was curious about other input on both specs.
Anyone....

The speedo is off by about 10%, so when it says you are going 117 you are really only going about 105, which is the rated top speed for this bike. Quarter mile time is 13.71 sec. @ 93.2 mph (though on magazine claimed 13.64 @ 95 mph), and 0-60 is right at 5 seconds.

The S50/ Intruder 800 also tops out at 105, and does the quarter mile in 13.30 seconds @ 97.2 MPH. I don't have the 0-60 time, but IIRC it was right at 4 seconds.

Yes, clearly. The smaller bike is lighter, has a better power to weight ratio, the motor revs higher and more quickly, and the rear end gearing is better suited for acceleration. The S50 has more lean angle also, so it is faster in the twisties.

The S83 is larger and less cramped, turns lower RPM on the interstate, has dual disk brakes, and is more comfortable for two-up riding. But just like a 350 Corvette could outrun a 454 Chevelle, all else being equal the smaller bike is faster than the larger one.

No, the C50 uses a completely different motor than the S50 does. The C50 motor itself makes a lot less horsepower, the shaft-drive gearing is different, and the C50 is about 100 pounds heavier than the S50. If the S50 is a Corvette and the S83 is a Chevelle, then the C50 is a Cadiliac Coupe de Ville. Built for comfort and not speed, the C50 does the quarter mile in a leasurely 15.61 seconds @ 82.5 MPH. In a drag race, the S50 beats the C50 in the quarter mile by about 350 feet.

Thank you! My mom says I'm smart but have a short attention span. I don't agree with...HEY LOOK! A SQUIRREL!!!

What was I saying?

I always laugh my ass off when a 1400 owner makes that remark. Hell, modify ANY bike and you can make it faster, so claiming that a modified 1400 is faster than an unmodified 800 is not much to brag about.

Is it true? Yes and no. If the uncorking is only partially done (aftermarket pipes, filters, and a re-jet but the air boxes not completely removed) then the 800 will still be faster. Or if the jetting is not right, uncorking can be a disaster: I have seen plenty of people attampt too uncork their 1400 only to end up with a bike that is slower than stock, or won't run in the rain, or stalls in a strong cross wind; power tuning is an art, and most folks don't know what they are doing.

But let's say you DO know what you are doing. If you spend the extra $2000 for the larger bike, spend another $700 on aftermarket pipes, K&N filters, a Stage III jet kit, then spend the afternoon cutting up and removing your airboxes, and manage to get the jetting just right, you can have a bike that is a little bit faster than a dead stock 800 costing $2700 less. A properly uncorked 1400 will outrun a stock 800 in the standing quarter mile, and it will gain some top speed also, so it will outrun the 800 above 100 MPH. But still does not have the lean angle to stay with the 800 in the corners, and the 800 still accelerates more quickly out of the corners, so the stock 800 can still have the advantage if the 800 owner chooses a twisty course and avoids the highway.

And, of cource, the 800 owners still has that $2700 left over to modify thier 800 with, don't they?

Sky Captain. Find someone riding an S50. Do a top gear roll on. The S83 has its advantages. The S50 and S83 are two different beasts. Comparing those two motors is like comparing a motor from an SV650 to the S50's.
