"systems"? We are surrounded by a degrading environment, loss of species & diversity, a worsening shortage of clean water, climate change (whether man-made or natural is irrelevant), accelerating nuclear proliferation and increasing religion-based bigotry. Despots rule most of the world. Is humanity on the down slope?
 
Yes things are bad and getting worse. What you said is true. The way the world is going down makes me believe the end is near. Actually nearer than most people have expected. The point is : what to do about it? We humans can not just sit and watch our ship sinking . We should do something about it.
 
Any time someone tells you "this time it's different!", rest-assured that just means they haven't studied much history, science, or anything...

Humanity will be just fine...you and I may not, but that's a different question!

(P.S. More of the planet is governed by democracy today than at any point in recorded history...)
